Measure to the center area of the screen as described in the source, and record the assumptions if seats form more than one row or an L-shaped sectional.
Use the main seat for the first calculation, then repeat for the nearest and farthest commonly used seats. A single diagonal cannot create the same image angle everywhere. If the results differ widely, prioritize the seat that matters most, change the seating plan, or compare several taped sizes rather than averaging distances without understanding who the average represents.
THX's small-room guidance instructs readers to measure from the seat to where the center of the TV will be and multiply that distance in inches by 0.835. THX gives 66 inches and a 55-inch TV as its example. Our calculator labels the multiplier as approximately a 40-degree horizontal field-of-view reference because that is the 16:9 trigonometric result; the angle label is our interpretation of THX's multiplier, not a claim that THX publishes a universal 40-degree home-TV standard.
Calculate a reference diagonal

There may be no 80.16-inch retail label. Compare nearby candidates without pretending the calculation is more precise than the decision. At 96 inches, a selected 75-inch 16:9 image produces about 37.6 degrees of horizontal field of view. A larger candidate produces a wider angle. Diagonal is not set width. Use the candidate manufacturer's exact specification for overall width, height, and depth, both with and without the stand. Measure the wall segment, console top, shelf opening, nearby door, and cable path. Verify that the support furniture and mount meet the selected product's requirements.
