Use diagonal only to sketch the visible 16:9 image. For a real fit decision, obtain the exact model's overall width, height, and depth; dimensions with and without its stand; stand footprint; mounting pattern; and required installation clearances. Compare those facts with the measured wall, furniture top, openings, cables, and support plan. Equal diagonal labels do not guarantee equal product dimensions.
Measure the available physical envelope
Define the proposed screen center and measure the uninterrupted wall width around it. Record nearby doors, windows, switches, outlets, thermostats, vents, shelves, trim, and speakers. Measure depth as well as width when the set sits in an alcove or when a door passes near the screen plane. An articulating mount can move the set outside its parked envelope, so check its complete range.
For a console installation, measure the usable top at its narrowest and shallowest points. Note rounded corners, raised edges, cable openings, and any overhang policy in the furniture or TV instructions. Verify load capacity separately; dimensional fit does not prove structural support. Convert diagonal only for an early image sketch
For a 16:9 image, width equals diagonal × 16 ÷ √(16² + 9²). A 55-inch diagonal produces an approximate visible width of 55 × 0.8716 = 47.94 inches. That number excludes bezel and chassis. It is useful for visualizing the picture, not ordering furniture or cutting a wall recess.

It lists dimensions of 48.2 by 29.9 by 7.8 inches with the stand and 48.2 by 27.9 by 3 inches without it; it also lists 32 inches between the two ends of the basic stand. These are model-specific facts for UN55U8000FFXZA, not universal dimensions for all Samsung TVs or all 55-inch TVs.
The approximate image width and the cited set width differ because the physical product includes more than the image. Another model may have different bezel, chassis, feet, or stand geometry. Open the exact manufacturer specification every time, including when two products share a class-size label.
Check stand and mount decisions separately
For feet near the ends of a TV, the console must support the actual contact points, not merely the center of the set. A center pedestal creates a different footprint. Confirm whether the manufacturer permits alternate foot positions and use only documented configurations. Never infer the stand position from a marketing photograph.
For wall mounting, exact set width remains relevant, but stand footprint does not.
