Measure curtain length from the actual point where the fabric hangs to the chosen endpoint. That starting point may be below a ring, at a hook, or along a rod pocket rather than at the top of the rod. Choose sill, apron, hover, floor, break, or puddle intentionally, measure at several positions, and match the result to the exact heading and hardware.
Identify the true hanging point
Install the rod or establish its final bracket height before ordering exact-length panels whenever possible. Attach one ring, clip, hook, or glider in the planned configuration and measure from the point that will support the fabric. If the product uses a rod pocket, confirm how much fabric sits above the rod and where finished length is defined.
The Home Depot curtain-measuring guide advises measuring decorative outside-mount curtains from floor to the top of the rod as a starting point, then deciding where panels end. It specifically calls for checking the floor-to-rod and floor-to-bottom-of-ring distances when rings are used. The second measurement is the useful clue: hardware changes the fabric's real starting point.
The Shade Store's installation guidance likewise frames length as a measurement from the rod area to the intended panel endpoint. Apply any source rule only with the selected product's heading instructions; custom workrooms may define finished length differently.
Choose and measure the endpoint
For a sill treatment, decide whether the hem ends at the sill, just above it, or below it, and verify that the panel will not interfere with handles or objects. For a floor hover, choose a small visible gap and account for floor variation. For a break or puddle, add intentional extra fabric and assess cleaning, traffic, pets, and moisture.
Measure at the left, center, and right of the treatment. Floors, rods, and ceilings are not always level. Record all three values and decide with the product maker whether to use the shortest, longest, or a custom correction. A single center measurement can produce one dragging hem and one obvious gap.
Suppose the actual hanging point is 98 inches above the finished floor and you want a 0.5-inch hover. Finished length is 98 − 0.5 = 97.5 inches. Compare the product's measured specification and care instructions with your target.
If the nearest panel is longer, check whether the manufacturer permits hemming and whether washing should occur before alteration. If it is shorter, moving the rod down changes both the visual placement and the relationship to trim or ceiling. Recheck bracket support and window proportions before changing hardware merely to match a stock length.

Verify rod position and installation conditions

Check radiators, baseboard heaters, floor vents, windows that open inward, furniture, cleaning equipment, and walking routes. Follow product and local safety requirements around heat sources and egress. Heavy or unusually tall treatments may need specialized hardware and installation advice.
