Window Treatment Planning
A curtain order has three separate dimensions: where the hardware sits, how much fabric covers that span, and where the fabric ends. Keep those decisions separate.
Start with rod span
Measure the window trim, then choose how far the rod will extend beyond each side. That rod span describes the hardware between its endpoints; it is not the total fabric coverage when side returns or center overlap are needed. Verify wall clearance, stud or anchor requirements, finials, brackets, and nearby corners before buying hardware.
Use coverage width = rod span + returns + center overlap. Returns cover the side gaps between the rod and wall. Center overlap gives meeting panels enough extra width to close without a light gap.

Choose fullness
Use required flat fabric width = coverage width x fullness. Header style and fabric weight affect the appropriate fullness, so use the range recommended by the seller rather than assuming one ratio fits every panel.
For per-panel or ready-made products, add the seller-stated flat width of every panel. Do not substitute the package count, pleated face width, or a styled product photo for that flat measurement.

Set finished length
Measure from the intended rod or ring position to the chosen endpoint: sill, below sill, floor, or a deliberate break at the floor. Seller terminology may call out panel length, finished length, header height, or ring drop differently. Check the product diagram to see which points the listed number actually connects.
If paint, trim, or wall repair is also part of the job, calculate those quantities from the separate surface measurements described in materials planning.
